St. John’s Catholic Junior school provides pupils with a creative, coherent, broad and balanced curriculum. Through the curriculum, pupils learn the basic skills necessary to succeed in each subject and we use the curriculum to help them develop their personal and social skills. Where children have special needs or disability, extra provision is made so they too can flourish.

We encourage children to be enthusiastic, independent and compassionate learners and we give them many opportunities to develop their inter-personal skills by working and cooperating with others. Through the curriculum, we build their self-esteem and self-confidence. We place an important emphasis on how children learn and encourage them to be reflective, resourceful, resilient and reciprocal learners.

We recognise that children have a thirst for knowledge and we aim to provide the building blocks of knowledge that enable the children to progress and follow their dreams through fostering the qualities of resilience and inquiry as well as planning opportunities for the children to know about keeping safe.

We provide:

  • A knowledge rich curriculum which is fun, exciting, challenging, dynamic and relevant to our children.
  • Curriculum leaders strive to make their subjects the best that they can be.
  • Everyone shows pride in their work.
  • A curriculum which celebrates cultural diversity.

The aim of the National Curriculum in England is to:

“provide pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said; and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement……

……The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum.”

At St. John’s, a full range of national curriculum subjects are delivered in order to offer all of our children a broad and balanced curriculum. These include: English, Mathematics, Religious Education, Science, History, Geography, Art and Design, Design Technology, Physical Education, Music, Spanish and Computing. Philosophy for Children, British Values and Personal, Health and Social Education are woven within our whole school curriculum.

The staff at St. John’s are responsible for the leadership of one of the curriculum subjects. Each subject leader reviews the curriculum plans for their subject, ensures that there is full coverage of the national curriculum programmes of study and that there is progression of skills.

The staff at St. John’s endeavour to ensure that all children are motivated, inspired and want to learn. The learning experiences that they provide are enriched through visits. St. John’s staff set high expectations for all children and plan to ensure that there are no barriers to every child achieving, visitors, themed weeks and extra-curricular activities. Year 6 also have the opportunity to participate in a residential visit to further broaden their experiences.
